US Military Returns to Ain al-Arab – Kobani, Northern Syria
After nearly five years of withdrawal, the US military has returned to the city of Ain al-Arab – Kobani in northern Syria, with the international coalition led by the United States beginning the construction of a base in the city center.
On Thursday morning, a convoy of trucks arrived in the city carrying logistical reinforcements including prefabricated rooms, surveillance cameras, digging machines, concrete blocks, and fuel tanks.
Experts say that after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, Kobani was under threat from Turkey. They
indicate that the return of American forces to the city is a positive sign and a relief to the Kurdish
public, potentially preventing further escalation and the horrors of war in the region.
The coalition will establish its base in one of the central hotels of the city, coinciding with the
arrival of special teams to oversee the base construction operations.
Following the collapse of the Syrian regime, the international coalition forces have been deploying
massive military reinforcements to northeastern Syria by land and air throughout December.
These reinforcements included over 400 trucks entering through the al-Waleed border crossing
with Iraq, and 18 cargo planes landing at the Kharab al-Jir base near the town of Rmeilan in the
far northeast.
