EU Agreement on Easing Sanctions Imposed on Syria
In a significant development, EU foreign ministers agreed on Monday on a “roadmap” to ease sanctions imposed on Syria. These sanctions have been in place against President Bashar al-Assad’s government and various economic sectors during the civil war.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, announced on the platform “X” that the ministers have agreed on this roadmap, which aims to review some of the punitive measures currently in place.
The European Union has expressed its desire to contribute to the reconstruction of Syria and to build relations with the new Syrian leadership, which has long called for the lifting of these sanctions.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot clarified that the easing of sanctions would cover vital sectors such as energy, transport, and financial institutions.
However, some EU member states have expressed reservations about this decision, calling for clear assurances from the Syrian government regarding the political transition path.
In this context, Kallas emphasized that while the EU wishes to move quickly, the sanctions could be reimposed if “wrong” decisions are made by Syrian authorities.
