Zelensky Announces Sending Wheat Flour to Syria
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday the dispatch of the first batch of food aid to Syria, marking a significant humanitarian gesture amidst the recent political upheaval in the country.
In a post on his X account, Zelensky stated, “500 tonnes of wheat flour are already on their way to Syria as part of our ‘Grain From Ukraine’ humanitarian initiative, in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).”
Zelensky further detailed that “the wheat flour is planned to be distributed to over 33,000 families, or approximately 167,000 individuals, in the coming weeks.” He added, “Each package
weighs 15 kilograms and can feed a family of five for one month.”
Following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Ukraine has expressed interest in restoring
relations with Damascus, which had previously relied on food imports from Moscow. However,
earlier reports from Russian and Syrian sources indicated that Russian wheat supplies to Syria
have been suspended due to uncertainties surrounding the situation.
