US Concern Over the Situation of Minorities in Syria
Axios reported that U.S. officials expressed Washington’s deep concern to the new Syrian transitional government’s Foreign Minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, regarding reports of violent attacks by armed groups against minorities in Syria over the past few days.
A Washington official told the site that U.S. envoy Daniel Rubinstein visited Damascus on Sunday
and met with the Syrian Foreign Minister to convey America’s concerns about what have been
described as acts of revenge and intimidation against minorities, demanding an immediate halt
to these actions.
Conversely, Axios reported that a U.S. official stated the new Syrian Foreign Minister confirmed
the transitional administration’s opposition to violence, noting that most of these acts are carried
out by other armed groups not affiliated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
The site also quoted the same source saying that the Syrian transitional administration, along
with its leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, is attempting to control the situation by dissolving what it
describes as militias and integrating them into a new national army as part of efforts to achieve
security and stability.
