Chinese Hackers Breached US Treasury, Stole Documents
Chinese state-sponsored hackers have breached the US Treasury Department earlier this month, stealing documents from its workstations, according to a letter to lawmakers obtained by Reuters. This incident is being labeled as a “major incident.”
The hackers managed to compromise a third-party cybersecurity service provider, gaining access
to unclassified documents. After being alerted by the cybersecurity firm BeyondTrust, the
Treasury Department is now collaborating with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security
Agency (CISA) and the FBI to assess the impact of the breach.
This comes on the heels of reports about an extensive Chinese cyber-espionage campaign named
“Salt Typhoon,” which resulted in the theft of “a substantial amount” of Americans’ metadata. A
senior US official had previously highlighted that this campaign allowed wide access to the
American telecommunications infrastructure, with the breach still ongoing.
