Syrian President Forms National Security Council Amid Rising Violence
On Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a presidential decree establishing the National Security Council in Syria, aiming to tackle the country’s pressing security challenges.
Purpose and Leadership of the National Security Council
According to a statement from President al-Sharaa’s office, the newly formed council will make critical decisions regarding Syria’s national security and the threats facing the nation. The council will be chaired by the President himself, who will oversee the coordination and management of the country’s security and political policies.
Composition of the Council
The National Security Council will consist of key figures, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Defense, the Director of General Intelligence, and the Minister of Interior. Additionally, two advisory seats will be appointed by the President based on “competence and experience.” A technical seat, also appointed by the President, will focus on scientific and technical matters related to the council’s mandate.
Escalating Violence in the Syrian Coast
The Syrian coast has witnessed a surge in violence since the fall of Bashar al-Assad on December 8. Attacks targeting the new authorities’ forces have intensified, alongside sectarian violence aimed at the Alawite community. On March 6, Syrian authorities reported confronting attacks on their forces, government buildings, and hospitals, resulting in the deaths of 231 personnel over several days, according to official figures.
Reports of Atrocities and Civilian Casualties
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented severe violations in the Syrian coast, including massacres, arson, and looting of homes. The observatory confirmed the deaths of 1,383 civilians at the hands of armed groups, both Syrian and foreign, including Turkestan and Uzbek fighters. The death toll is expected to rise, with thousands still missing.
The Alawite Community in Syria
The Alawite population in Syria is estimated at around 1.7 million, accounting for approximately 9% of the country’s population. The community has been disproportionately targeted in the recent wave of sectarian violence.
