According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli military plans to present its strategy for securing the breached border with Jordan to top officials from the Finance and Defense Ministries in the coming days. The goal is to secure funding and approval for the necessary budget.
The newspaper reports that since the beginning of the year, the Israeli military has observed a rise in Iranian efforts to arm militants in the West Bank with explosives and traditional improvised explosive devices through smuggling across the eastern border, which incurs very high costs.
The proposed plan will involve three key phases:
- Deploying hundreds of surveillance and monitoring systems, such as radars and cameras on towers, along the exposed border stretching from Eilat to the border triangle.
- Stationing rapid response forces to handle any unusual events.
- Undertaking a major upgrade of the engineering barrier along the border.
The report also notes that the recent fatal attack at the Allenby Bridge served as a stark reminder of the explosives present along the eastern border with Jordan. The threat posed by these explosives is more strategic than a direct attack on Israelis. The Israeli military is therefore developing a comprehensive plan to secure the long-neglected border, which Iran has increasingly exploited over the past year to arm militants in the West Bank.
