Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi congratulated his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on winning the run-off presidential election and extending his tenure for a further five years.
In the congratulatory message on Sunday night, Raisi expressed confidence that in the coming period, the friendly relations between Iran and Turkey, which are based on strong historical, cultural, and religious bonds, good neighborliness, mutual respect and common interests of the two nations, will further strengthen and the close cooperation between the two countries will provide more suitable conditions for strengthening the peace and stability and development of the region.
Erdogan had failed to secure more than 50 percent of votes required for an outright victory in the first round of election on May 14.
Erdogan received over 52 percent of votes in the second round on Sunday, beating his challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who won 47.86 percent.
