Annual inflation in the eurozone slowed, according to preliminary estimates, to 6.1% in May 2023 from 7% in the previous month (March 2023), according to Eurostat data.
The result was contrary to expectations of analysts, who were polled by DailyFX portal, as they expected the index to slow to 6.3% only.
Official data showed an increase in the consumer price index in the region by 6.1% in May 2023 on an annual basis, compared to an increase of 7% in April 2023.
Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, declined from 5.6% in April to 5.3% in May, while it was expected to reach 5.5%.
