Sullivan has said that he cannot make a legal determination as to whether Israel is abiding by the laws of war, but he stressed that the US position is that the Israeli army should to distinguish between fighters and civilians.
“I am not in a position to give you a legal determination to your question,” the White House national security adviser said when asked about possible Israeli war crimes.
“What I’m in a position to do is to state the US government position on how the Israeli operation should be conducted.”
He added that Israel has a responsibility to “act in ways that separate terrorists from civilians”.
