It is necessary for the UNHCR and the responsible international organizations to avoid discrimination in dealing with the problems of the displaced persons and refugees of various countries and the states hosting them, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said in a meeting with UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi, held on the sidelines of the Global Refugee Forum in Switzerland’s Geneva on Thursday.
He also called on the UN and the UNHCR to provide more assistance for Iran which is hosting millions of foreign refugees and offering them services under the pressure of the cruel unilateral sanctions imposed by the US.
Amirabdollahian further voiced deep concern about the Zionist regime’s perilous plans for the forced displacement of Palestinians from northern Gaza, urging the UNHCR to take serious action to prevent a new wave of exodus of Palestinians.
For his part, Grandi lauded Iran for hosting a large population of foreign migrants and refugees.
The Italian diplomat also expounded on the UNHCR’s policies to support the countries hosting refugees, saying the agency is trying to mobilize efforts and drum up support from the world to reduce a budget deficit and assist the nations that host refugees and forcibly displaced communities.
