Tamas Sulyok was nominated by the ruling coalition holding 135 out of 199 seats in Hungary’s parliament
Hungary’s parliament on Monday elected Tamas Sulyok, head of the Constitutional Court, as the country’s new president following the resignation of Katalin Novak, who stepped down amid a child abuse pardoning scandal.
The presidential election took place on the first day of the parliament’s spring session.
Sulyok, 67, was nominated by the ruling coalition holding 135 out of 199 seats in Hungary’s parliament. All the pro-government lawmakers voted in favor of Sulyok, thus ensuring his victory in the first round of voting.
