During a telephone call today, President Mahmoud Abbas and the President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb, discussed the latest developments in Palestine in the light of the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, particularly in the besieged Gaza Strip.
President Abbas stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring the importance of accelerating the introduction of humanitarian, relief and medical assistance, preventing displacement and stopping the dangerous escalation carried out by Israeli forces and extremist colonists in the West Bank, including Jerusalem.
He also reaffirmed during the call the new government’s commitment to fulfill its duties in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem, including the provision of humanitarian relief efforts and necessary reforms and the achievement of financial and economic stability, which would require the exertion of pressure on the Israeli government to release the withheld Palestinian clearance funds.
President Abbas emphasized the need to convene an international donors’ conference to mobilize financial support to assist the new government’s budget and programs, stressing that the State of Palestine will continue its endeavors to obtain full membership in the United Nations and further recognition of the state of Palestine.
For his part, the Finnish President reiterated his country’s support for the two-state solution, underlining the importance of working toward achieving a ceasefire and a lasting truce. He also affirmed his country’s support for reaching a political solution to achieve peace and security for all.
He said that Finland, as a peace-loving nation, will continue to support efforts to achieve stability, security and peace in the region.
