Egypt welcomed on Wednesday the decision of the Slovenian government and parliament to recognize the State of Palestine, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid.
On Tuesday, Slovenia’s parliament passed a decree recognising a Palestinian state, with 52 members of the 90-member parliament voting in favour of the government-sponsored decree.
According to Abu Zeid, Cairo considered this decision an important step to support the Palestinians’ legitimate right to establish their independent state and the international efforts towards implementing the two-state solution.
The European nation’s move came in response to the brutal Israeli war in the Gaza Strip. Slovenia is the most recent European country to recognize the state of Palestine, following Norway, Spain, and Ireland.
In April, the United States thwarted a Palestinian effort at the United Nations Security Council to achieve full UN membership using its veto power.
In early May, the UN General Assembly passed an Arab-proposed draft resolution by a more than two-thirds majority to reconsider and support Palestine’s UN membership.
The resolution grants Palestine several rights within the UN General Assembly, such as introducing and co-sponsoring proposals and amendments and raising procedural motions. It also grants it a seat among member states and other privileges.
