Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with the Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golub, on the sidelines of the “Gaza Emergency Humanitarian Response Conference” hosted by Jordan.
President Abbas thanked the Slovenian Prime Minister for his country’s courageous and principled position on the recognition of the State of Palestine, which complements Slovenia’s positions in support of international law and international legitimacy, as well as the right of the Palestinian people to freedom and independence.
The President stressed that the decision to recognize Palestinian statehood would contribute to protecting the two-state solution, which is being systematically destroyed, as well as to achieving security, peace and stability for all.
The President informed the Prime Minister of Slovenia that he had instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates to establish an embassy for the State of Palestine in Slovenia.
They discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian arena, the ongoing efforts with all parties to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the withdrawal of the occupation forces from the entire Gaza Strip, the acceleration of the introduction of aid to avoid the risk of imminent famine faced by the population of Gaza due to Israel’s control and closure of all border crossings, as well as the need for the immediate release of the Palestinian clearance funds withheld by Israel and the cessation of all Israeli measures aimed at strangling the Palestinian economy.
For his part, the Slovenian Prime Minister reiterated his country’s support for the Palestinian people and their unwavering and legitimate right to regain sovereignty over their land, as well as their rights to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state.
He stressed the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the introduction of aid to the Palestinian people there and respect for international law as the basis for resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The Slovenian government approved a decision to recognize Palestine as an independent state on May 30th.
On June 5th, Slovenia recognized Palestine as an independent and sovereign state after its parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the move.
