A Rasmussen Reports poll released on Friday revealed that a majority of likely voters in the United States believe President Joe Biden should resign.
The poll shows that 52% of respondents think Biden should step down after ending his 2024 reelection bid. Moreover, 76% of respondents support his decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
Biden ended his reelection campaign last Sunday due to concerns from some Democrats about his viability as a candidate, particularly following a poor debate performance against Republican nominee Donald Trump.
On the same day he announced his withdrawal, House Speaker Mike Johnson called for his immediate resignation as President.
In the wake of his withdrawal, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Harris has so far secured the endorsement of the Clintons and the Obamas, but still lacks a base strong enough to continue forwards, some critics say.
The poll surveyed 1,074 likely US voters from July 22-24, with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points and a 95% confidence level
On Thursday, Harris accused Donald Trump of backing down from debating her, even though she is willing to participate.
Harris claimed to reporters that Trump previously agreed to debate on September 10.
“Now appears he is backpedaling, but I’m ready, and I think the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race on a debate stage and so I’m ready. Let’s go on.”
A nationwide Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted after Biden withdrew from the race showed Harris leading Trump 44% to 42% among registered voters.
The polls, a week ago, before Biden withdrew, showed Harris and Trump tied at 44%.\
