On the occasion of “Islamic Human Rights and Human Dignity Day,” the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanaani, called for more effective support from Islamic nations and governments for the rights of millions of Palestinians.
In a statement released on August 4, Kanaani emphasized the significance of this day, highlighting the principles and values upheld by Islam regarding human rights and dignity.
“In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, “Kanaani began the statement with a verse from the Holy Quran: “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13)
He noted that the 14th of Mordad, corresponding to August 4, marks “Islamic Human Rights and Human Dignity Day,” established in 2008 by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the proposal of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The OIC had earlier adopted the Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam in 1990.
Kanaani asserted that Islam is the greatest advocate for the material and spiritual rights of human beings, pointing out that Islamic teachings have always emphasized the right to life and the dignity of all individuals. He argued that, in today’s world, Islamic governments and nations are uniquely positioned to champion and promote these high Islamic and human values.
Moreover, the spokesperson stressed the need for a global and reformist commitment to advancing the concept of human rights and the associated real values, cautioning against the misuse of these principles for illegitimate political goals by powerful entities.
Kanaani also highlighted the plight of Palestinians who have endured decades of severe violations of their human rights under siege, bombardment, displacement, or imprisonment.
He described the actions of the occupying regime as unprecedented in modern history, characterizing them as severe and heinous anti-humanitarian and anti-human actions that verge on genocide.
Kanaani called on the international community to end the unacceptable impunity of the Zionist regime, which he claimed shows no commitment to basic human rights principles. He emphasized the critical role and responsibility of Islamic countries and nations in achieving this important goal and preventing further trampling of human dignity.
