In a diplomatic exchange, Iran’s acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, engaged in a phone conversation with Belgian Foreign Minister Haja Lahbib on Saturday night to discuss the ongoing conflict and Israeli genocide in Gaza.
During the call, Bagheri Kani condemned over ten months of aggressive and terrorist actions by Israel in Gaza. He highlighted the recent targeting of a school in Gaza, where innocent people were killed while praying, and pointed to further incidents, including an attack on a residential area in Beirut and the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. These actions, Bagheri Kani argued, have severely undermined the stability and security of West Asia.
The Iranian minister emphasized that Iran is prepared to take legitimate and decisive action against Israel to protect its national security, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.
Belgian Foreign Minister Lahbib expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in the region, warning that the current trajectory could lead to a full-scale war. She reaffirmed Belgium’s support for the Palestinian right to self-determination and condemned Israeli settlement-building activities. Lahbib also stressed Belgium’s commitment to the rights of Palestinian refugees and signaled the possibility of imposing sanctions against extremist Israeli settlers.
Lahbib underscored the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, calling for all parties to exercise maximum restraint. She also emphasized the importance of continued diplomatic consultations between Tehran and Brussels to address the worsening crisis in the region.
