A growing number of patients in the UK are turning to Botox to combat neck pain caused by excessive use of smartphones and other technology. This treatment, known as “Trap Tox,” involves injecting Botox into the trapezius muscles in the neck to alleviate tension from constant forward bending toward devices, according to The Daily Mail.
Growing Demand for “Trap Tox”
Ashwin Soni, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, noted a steady rise in patients seeking this treatment. He treats around 10 patients monthly, with most being over 40 years old. These individuals suffer from what is now referred to as “tech neck.”
How Botox Eases Neck Pain
Botox works by blocking nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, improving neck mobility and reducing tension. While Botox is commonly used to treat wrinkles, it has found a new application in treating “tech neck,” costing approximately £600 per session.
The Impact of Poor Posture
A recent study from King’s College London revealed that forward-bending posture increases spinal pressure by more than four times, leading to neck pain, tension headaches, and muscle spasms. This research highlights the growing strain on the neck due to increased technology usage.
Safety and Side Effects
Though generally safe, Botox injections can cause side effects such as headaches, pain, and dizziness. The World Health Organization also advises limiting screen time for children to less than an hour daily due to the rising tech usage among younger generations.
