Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday that it returned the body of Jordanian citizen Maher Al-Jazi to his family for burial. Al-Jazi was killed following an attack near the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby Bridge), which links Jordan with the West Bank. The incident occurred on the Palestinian side of the bridge, under Israeli control.
Ministry spokesperson Sufyan Qudah said the Jordanian government is working to secure the release of two other Jordanian citizens, Mufleh Al-Awdat and Hussein Al-Naimat. Israeli forces detained them after the same incident. Qudah emphasized that the Ministry is coordinating with relevant agencies for their return to Jordan.
The attack took place on September 8. An armed assailant, later identified as Maher Al-Jazi, crossed from Jordan into the Israeli-controlled West Bank. According to Israeli officials, Al-Jazi shot and killed three Israeli civilians before Israeli forces killed him.
This was the first cross-border attack between Jordan and Israel since October 7, when Hamas launched a major assault on southern Israel. That attack escalated into the ongoing war between Israel and Gaza-based militants. The timing of the King Hussein Bridge incident adds to the already high tensions in the region.
The Jordanian government is concerned about its detained citizens’ safety. It is using diplomatic channels to ensure their release. The Ministry remains in close contact with Israeli authorities and international mediators to resolve the issue.
