Sigrid Kaag, the UN’s Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, praised the UAE for its efforts in evacuating 252 patients from Gaza for medical treatment. The evacuation helped provide urgent care to those in need.
Ongoing Vaccination Campaign in Gaza
During a UN Security Council briefing, Kaag mentioned the ongoing vaccination campaign in Gaza. This campaign, jointly conducted by the World Health Organization, UNRWA, and UNICEF, recently completed its first phase. The second phase is scheduled to begin in four weeks.
Humanitarian Action in Difficult Conditions
Kaag highlighted the success of the polio vaccination campaign. She stated, “The campaign proves that humanitarian work is possible even in the toughest circumstances, with enough political will.” Her comments were reported by the Emirates News Agency.
The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Kaag also addressed the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Over 14,000 patients urgently need treatment. As winter approaches, addressing these needs becomes even more pressing. The ongoing conflict has caused severe devastation in Gaza. According to Kaag, more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed and 93,000 injured. She added that over 22,000 people now suffer from life-changing injuries, with many facing amputations.
The conflict has also led to the collapse of essential services in Gaza, including healthcare and education. Kaag noted that 625,000 children are currently out of school due to the ongoing crisis.
Kaag urged the immediate and unconditional release of 101 hostages held by Hamas. She also emphasized the critical role of UNRWA in supporting humanitarian operations in Gaza. However, continued violence and logistical challenges hinder their efforts.
