Japan has issued a tsunami warning for two islands following an earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near Torishima Island.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the preliminary magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9.
Authorities have warned that a potential tsunami could reach heights of up to one meter in the Izu and Ogasawara islands. Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake, which occurred on Tuesday near the Izu Islands, registered a magnitude of 5.7.
Despite the tremor, several residents of these islands told NHK, Japan’s national television network, that they did not feel the earthquake.
Japan is located on four major tectonic plates, whose interaction causes frequent seismic and volcanic activity. The country experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes annually, most of them minor. However, Japan’s advanced construction techniques and strict emergency procedures help mitigate the impact of larger quakes.
