Early Sunday morning, the Lebanese capital, Beirut, was rocked by violent Israeli airstrikes, primarily targeting the southern suburb, a stronghold of Hezbollah.
Sources in Beirut reported that several buildings in the southern suburbs were hit by Israeli airstrikes, causing massive explosions and fires. Despite the intensity of the attacks, air traffic at Rafic Hariri International Airport continued without interruption, according to the same sources.
Massive Explosions and Fires in Southern Beirut
The Lebanese National News Agency confirmed that Israeli fighter jets carried out four extremely violent airstrikes on the southern suburbs and another on the Choueifat area, with ambulances rushing to the scene. Earlier on Sunday, Israeli airstrikes also targeted Haret Hreik, another area in the southern suburbs.
These continuous attacks have resulted in large fires, causing further panic in the already devastated area.
Ongoing Israeli Campaign Against Hezbollah
The Israeli army had issued warnings on Saturday night to residents of several neighborhoods in the southern suburbs to evacuate, as they continue to target Hezbollah infrastructure and facilities across Beirut.
Since the beginning of Israel’s bombing campaign on September 23, over 1,100 people have been killed across Lebanon, according to official figures.
