The World Food Programme (WFP) issued an urgent call Tuesday for immediate action to prevent a potential famine in Gaza. WFP warned that the ongoing humanitarian crisis could quickly worsen due to severe restrictions on aid delivery.
This month, a global monitoring organization highlighted that the entire Gaza Strip faces a high risk of famine, exacerbated by continued Israeli military actions that hinder humanitarian aid access.
In its statement, WFP said, “As conditions in northern Gaza continue to deteriorate, the risk of a larger population facing famine will undoubtedly increase if conditions on the ground do not improve.”
WFP noted that it has approximately 94,000 tons of food ready in Egypt and Jordan, enough to feed one million people for four months. However, it has been unable to deliver this aid to Gaza due to limited open entry points and unsafe passage.
The organization further emphasized that humanitarian aid restrictions into Gaza are extreme, with only 5,000 tons of aid having entered this month. WFP cited approval delays for trucks, driver clearances, and extended wait times at checkpoints as critical obstacles that must be resolved to improve aid flow into Gaza.
