Israel has issued a stern warning to Iraq, threatening military action if Iranian-backed groups continue their attacks on Israeli territory from Iraqi soil. According to a Sunday report by The Times of Israel, Israeli satellite surveillance has observed activities involving the transfer of ballistic missiles and related equipment from Iran into Iraq. The objective of these movements, as Israel asserts, appears to be the staging of imminent attacks on Israeli targets.
Unidentified officials informed The Times of Israel that these surveillance efforts have helped identify specific locations and groups associated with Iran within Iraq. In its warning to Baghdad, Israel stated that Iraq must take immediate steps to prevent these groups from using Iraqi soil for launching attacks. This marks an intensification of rhetoric from Israel, reflecting growing regional instability.
Reports suggest that in recent weeks, the frequency of drone attacks on Israel has increased. A regional security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported an average of five attacks daily from within Iraq, attributed to Iran-aligned armed groups. Last week alone, these groups launched eight drones in a 24-hour period.
U.S. forces and allied partners have reportedly been intercepting some of these drones, aiming to counter the ongoing threats. However, with tensions high, there is now an increased likelihood that Israel could respond directly to these escalating hostilities.
