Western Reluctance to Discuss Middle East Issues at G20 Summit
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a press conference following his participation in the G20 Summit, stated that the West was hesitant to discuss Middle East issues for inclusion in the G20 declaration.
Lavrov explained, “Certainly, the West was reluctant to discuss this topic, but they well understood that without it, there would be no section on conflicts.”
He pointed out that “one of the paragraphs is filled with detailed assessments confirming the catastrophic and disastrous situation for the residents of Gaza.”
The minister emphasized that “there were attempts to place this paragraph after the Ukraine
section, but even here, we no longer need to emphasize our rejection of such manipulation, as
countries of the Global South have firmly opposed downplaying the importance of the fact that the
G20 should primarily focus on the tragedy in Gaza.”
Sergey Lavrov, in his statements regarding the situation in Gaza, added that “the tragic situation
of the Strip’s residents and what’s happening there is a focus of the G20, where the number of
civilian casualties is double that of the civilian casualties on both sides in the conflict in Ukraine
since the 2014 coup.”
He also noted that “it is never permissible to destroy civilian infrastructure, and in Gaza, many
hospitals, schools, and buildings have been destroyed.”
Yesterday, the G20 Summit began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the participation of leaders from
the world’s largest economies, where Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov led the Russian delegation
under instructions from President Vladimir Putin.
