France and the EU Warned of Being “Crushed” by Trump’s Policies
In a stark warning, French Prime Minister François Bayrou expressed concerns that both France
and the European Union could be “crushed” by the policies of Donald Trump if they fail to act
decisively.
Bayrou highlighted that the United States has decided to pursue an incredibly dominant policy
through the dollar, industrial policy, and by monopolizing research and investments. “If we do
nothing, we will be subjected to domination, crushed, and marginalized… It is up to us, the
French and Europeans, to regain control,” he stated.
Speaking to municipal employees in Beau, a town in southeastern France which he leads, Bayrou
emphasized the responsibilities that Trump’s presidency imposes on Europe. He pointed out the
“strength of China,” noting that its trade surplus exceeded a trillion dollars in December.
“France and Europe are facing two challenges today,” Bayrou said, referring to both the American and Chinese influences.
Trump is set to take the oath of office on Monday in an inauguration ceremony moved inside the
U.S. Capitol due to record-breaking cold temperatures.
The French Prime Minister’s comments underscore a growing sentiment in Europe where leaders
are increasingly vocal about the need to counterbalance the economic and political shifts
influenced by the new U.S. administration. His remarks come at a time when the EU is grappling
with its internal issues while trying to maintain its global standing amidst rising powers.
