Iraqi and Turkish Foreign Ministers Discuss Regional Issues and Damascus
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Baghdad on Sunday, stated that they discussed regional issues and the ongoing communication with Damascus.
Hussein and Fidan delved into a range of security and economic issues of mutual interest, notably the situation in Syria, border matters, and the “Development Road” project.
In their joint press conference, the Iraqi Foreign Minister emphasized that the relationship between Iraq and Turkey is “good” and that both countries are working on its development, especially following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s earlier visit to Baghdad.
Hussein highlighted discussions on economic and political matters, alongside the surrounding
regional conditions and continuous engagement with the new administration in Damascus to
address the situation in Syria.
This visit comes on the heels of signing 27 agreements and memoranda of understanding
between Baghdad and Ankara in April 2024, which included a notable water agreement and other
areas to enhance cooperation between the two nations.
For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister described the relationship with Iraq as “strategic”,
noting that Iraq’s stability and security positively reflect on Turkey.
Fidan confirmed that Turkey is working on implementing the “Development Road” project and
seeks to contribute to joint development initiatives, focusing on security coordination.
He also pointed out the importance of resolving regional disputes to ensure the security of both
countries, affirming the continuation of intelligence cooperation between Baghdad and Ankara in
this context.
