Syrians Await Concrete Actions from New Authority’s Commitments
In a recent Security Council session on Syria, UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen highlighted that Syrian citizens are eagerly waiting for the new authority to translate its promises into concrete actions that respect the country’s demographic diversity.
Pedersen stated, “The regime has committed to working towards forming an inclusive transitional government that acknowledges diversity, and the new authorities have put forward numerous commitments. The key lies in their execution.”
He further noted the Syrian public’s anticipation for these commitments to materialize into tangible actions, expressing concerns over discriminatory measures targeting women. “Syrians are watching closely to see if these commitments will lead to actions. There’s worry about discriminatory actions targeting women,” Pedersen added.
The UN Envoy also welcomed the opening of communication channels between the new authority and the Syrian Democratic Forces, acknowledging the complex security landscape in various Syrian regions. He voiced concerns about external forces potentially exploiting the state of “fragmentation and weakness.”
Moreover, Pedersen reported on “disturbing allegations of abuses by security forces in Syria,” urging the authorities to provide assurances through a comprehensive transitional justice system in the country.
Earlier, Syrian Foreign Minister of the interim government, Asaad al-Shihabi, confirmed that the government, set to be announced on March 1st, will represent the diversity of the Syrian people.
This development comes at a critical time when the international community and local Syrians alike are looking for signs of genuine change and inclusivity in Syrian governance. The focus remains on whether these commitments will lead to actions that can foster peace, security, and justice for all Syrians.
