Israeli Media Reveals “Real Reason” Behind Sisi’s Meeting with World Jewish Congress President
Israeli media outlets have disclosed the “real reason” behind the visit of Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress, to Egypt and his meeting with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
According to the Israeli news website Kikar, the visit came just days after statements by Israel’s Ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, who accused Egypt of “deliberately violating peace agreements with Israel.” Leiter pointed to the construction of Egyptian military bases in Sinai allegedly designated for offensive weapons.
The website explained that these statements angered Egyptian officials, prompting Lauder to travel to Cairo to de-escalate tensions. During his visit, Lauder held meetings with President Sisi and the head of Egyptian intelligence, Major General Hassan Rashad, expressing his support for Egypt’s position and praising its efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East.
According to a report by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, two senior Egyptian officials stated
that Lauder arrived in Cairo urgently to calm the situation following Leiter’s remarks. In a meeting with
Jewish leaders in the United States, Leiter claimed that the Egyptian military bases in Sinai constituted
a “blatant violation” of peace agreements, questioning, “Who will the Egyptian army target with its
attacks?”
The report added that during the meeting, Lauder reaffirmed his commitment to President Sisi’s stance,
expressing appreciation for Egypt’s role as a mediator between Israel and Hamas. He also voiced
optimism about the Egyptian plan to be presented at the Arab Summit regarding Gaza’s future and
reconstruction efforts.
During the discussions, Leiter’s statements were presented to Lauder, alongside Sisi’s position, which
emphasized Egypt’s commitment to establishing a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East
Jerusalem as its capital. A senior Egyptian source revealed that Lauder felt “embarrassed” by the
remarks and repeatedly stressed the importance Israel places on its peace treaty with Egypt. The source
added that the main goal of Lauder’s visit was to “extinguish the fire ignited by the ambassador’s words.”
An official statement from the Egyptian Presidency’s office indicated that the talks focused on Egypt’s efforts to achieve regional peace and establish a Palestinian state. President Sisi highlighted the importance of all concerned parties, including Israel, acting responsibly to ensure the continuation of the ceasefire.
The statement also noted that Lauder expressed appreciation for Egypt’s role in promoting peace in the Middle East and voiced hope for the Egyptian proposal concerning Gaza.
Lauder added that peace represents “a new hope” and must be achieved through a two-state solution.
