Grand Egyptian Museum Opening Date Announced
Egypt revealed on Tuesday that the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum will officially open its doors in July, with celebrations spanning several days.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly shared during a cabinet meeting that the Grand Egyptian Museum is set to open officially on July 3, following its trial operations last year. “The event, eagerly awaited by the world, will unfold over multiple days,” Madbouly stated.
He added, “Several ministries and relevant authorities have been assigned tasks that will be monitored regularly to ensure the global opening ceremony is executed flawlessly.”
Construction of the museum, which occupies over 300,000 square meters near the Giza Pyramids, began in May 2005. The project was overseen by UNESCO and supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Grand Egyptian Museum promises a modern, expansive display space for ancient Egyptian artifacts, currently crowded in the historic Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, established in 1902.
Among the museum’s standout exhibits will be the complete collection from King Tutankhamun’s tomb, discovered in 1922.
Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy, speaking after the cabinet meeting, confirmed that preparations are underway to secure sponsors for the event to reduce financial pressure on the state budget. In statements to local Egyptian media, he noted that the opening ceremony will welcome leaders and officials from around the globe on the scheduled date, with additional events planned before and after the main celebration.
Fathy also highlighted that specialized teams are continuously reviewing logistics, including hotel arrangements, transportation routes, and other guest-related details, alongside domestic and international promotional strategies.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is poised to become a global cultural landmark, showcasing Egypt’s rich history in an unprecedented way.
