Israeli Chief of Staff Comments on Army Investigation into October 7 Defeat: “We Failed, and I Bear Responsibility”
Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi announced that Israel made mistakes on October 7, taking personal responsibility for the failure.
Halevi stated, “We have no issue admitting that we failed on October 7, and I bear the responsibility.” He further elaborated, “My responsibility is my own. I was the army commander on October 7, and I have my duties. In everything I do, I see a part of me that erred.”

According to Halevi, “Since October 7, I’ve made it a point to reflect on the failure multiple times a day. We had soldiers who fought bravely, and we heard their voices over the radio during the investigations. We had observers who continued reporting events professionally and calmly until the very last moment. This is the Israel Defense Forces.”
Meanwhile, the Israeli military revealed key findings from its investigations into the “Al-Aqsa Flood” attack on October 7, 2023. The army’s investigation concluded, “The military believed Israel’s next war would be multi-front, but Israel’s enemies were more prepared for a multi-front war than we had estimated.”
It added, “On October 7, Israel’s perception that the conflict with Hamas could be managed collapsed. The military intelligence division failed to predict the decision to launch the surprise attack and its execution on October 7.”
