Israel Pressures US to Keep Syria Weak
Four informed sources revealed that Israel is pressing the United States to ensure Syria remains weak and without a strong central authority. This strategy involves allowing Russia to maintain its two military bases in the country to counterbalance Turkey’s growing influence in Syria.
The sources explained that Turkey’s often strained relations with Benjamin Netanyahu’s government came under significant pressure during the Gaza war. Israeli officials have conveyed to Washington that the current Syrian administration, backed by Ankara, poses a threat to Israel’s borders.
This pressure reflects a coordinated Israeli campaign to influence U.S. policy at a critical juncture for Syria. The new administration, which recently overthrew Bashar al-Assad, is attempting to stabilize the country and push Washington to lift sanctions.
According to three U.S. sources and another individual familiar with the communications, Israel presented its stance to senior American officials during meetings in Washington in February 2025, as well as subsequent discussions in Israel with U.S. Congress representatives.
Two of the sources noted that an Israeli document outlining key points was also distributed to senior U.S. officials.
