Al-Sharaa Tasks a 7-Member Committee with Drafting a Constitutional Declaration
On Sunday, Transitional President Ahmed Al-Sharaa assigned a 7-member committee, including one woman, the task of drafting a constitutional declaration. This step is part of organizing Syria’s political transition phase following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, with no specific deadline set for completing its work.
The committee consists of Abdel Hamid Al-Awak, Yasser Al-Huwaish, Ismail Al-Khalfan, Rayan Kahilan, Mohammed Radha Jalki, Ahmed Qarbi, and Bahiya Markani. It is responsible for preparing a draft constitutional declaration to regulate Syria’s transitional period.
Following his announcement as transitional president on January 29, Al-Sharaa pledged to issue a “constitutional declaration” for the transitional phase. This would come after forming a “preparatory committee to select a smaller legislative council” and dissolving the People’s Assembly. He stated that Syria would need four to five years to organize elections.
The final statement of the National Dialogue Conference on Tuesday outlined the broad framework for building a new state in Syria after Assad’s overthrow. It emphasized the importance of achieving transitional justice, reinforcing the values of freedom, and ensuring that weapons remain solely in the hands of the state.
The statement also called on authorities to “form a constitutional committee to prepare a draft permanent constitution for the country.” This constitution should “achieve a balance of powers, enshrine the values of justice, freedom, and equality, and establish a state based on the rule of law and
institutions.”
