Algerian President Decides Not to Attend Arab Summit Due to Lack of Coordination
The Algerian Press Service (APS) reported that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has decided not to participate in the emergency Arab Summit scheduled for March 4 in Egypt, which aims to address developments in the Palestinian issue.
According to a source cited by APS, “The President has tasked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, with representing Algeria at the summit.” The decision stems from “shortcomings and flaws” in the summit’s preparatory process, which was monopolized by a small, exclusive group of Arab states. These countries unilaterally drafted the summit’s outcomes in Cairo without coordinating with other Arab nations equally invested in the Palestinian cause.
The source emphasized that President Tebboune was deeply troubled by this approach, which included some states while excluding others, suggesting that supporting the Palestinian cause has become the prerogative of a select few. “Logic dictates strengthening Arab unity and rallying all Arab states around their central cause—the Palestinian issue—especially as it faces existential challenges threatening the core of the Palestinian national project,” the source added.
The APS further noted Algeria’s consistent advocacy for a unified Arab stance. “This is the approach Algeria has always championed and continues to uphold through its role in the UN Security Council, serving as an Arab voice for justice, defending the oppressed, and advocating for the Palestinian cause without expecting reward or gratitude from its brethren. Yet, it laments the current state of the Arab nation,” the agency stated.
