Turkish Military Attaché Begins Duties in Damascus
The Turkish military attaché officially began his duties in Damascus today, Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
The Turkish Embassy in Damascus announced that the Turkish military attaché in Syria, led by Lieutenant Colonel Hasan Göz, has started his new responsibilities. The embassy emphasized the continuation of “close” military cooperation between Syria and Turkey, as reported by the Turkish Anadolu Agency.
Last week, the Turkish Ministry of Defense stated that it was preparing to send its military attaché to Syria within the coming days. The ministry highlighted its efforts to enhance Syria’s defense and security capabilities, undertaken in close collaboration and coordination with the new administration in Damascus.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Zeki Aktürk, noted that the visit of President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his accompanying delegation to Turkey earlier that month had added “a new and significant dimension to the relations between the two countries.” He further explained that Turkey’s fight against “terrorism” continues unabated, adding that the process of appointing a military attaché in Syria was ongoing, with an announcement expected soon. This was reported by Turkey’s official IHA news agency at the time.
Aktürk also revealed that a technical delegation from the Turkish Ministry of Defense is scheduled to visit Syria in the near future as part of efforts to “develop bilateral military relations.”
On February 6, 2025, the Turkish Ministry of Defense unveiled a roadmap aimed at improving the capabilities of the Syrian army. According to Anadolu Agency, the ministry stated that this joint roadmap with the new Syrian government aligns with the latter’s demands, and concrete steps will be taken to implement it.
Since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, Turkey has steadily strengthened its ties with the new Syrian administration across multiple domains.
On February 4, 2025, Reuters reported that discussions between President al-Sharaa and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, included talks on a joint defense agreement. This potential agreement involves establishing Turkish airbases in central Syria and training the new Syrian army.
