Reports have revealed an increase in global demand for one of the most common commodities in the Mediterranean countries, led by Tunisia, Syria and Lebanon, where global demand for a consumer commodity dubbed by experts has increased.
The price of a kilo in Tunisia is more than 100% higher than a year ago, and in Turkey the government has just imposed a tax of 20 cents on every kilo exported abroad.
In addition, countries producing “green gold” such as Lebanon and some other countries are witnessing an unprecedented demand for the olive oil they produce, as a Spanish company arrived, this month, and bought all of Lebanon’s reserves of oil.
Christian Kamel, director of the Fair Trade Lebanon Project, told MEE: “The Spaniards have emptied Lebanon of olive oil,” adding, “There is an opportunity for us, because our prices will remain the same and Spanish prices are rising.”
The Rising temperatures and droughts in southern Europe In 2022-2023, olive oil production fell to half the amount it normally produces.
European producers have turned to other countries such as Tunisia, the Arab world’s largest olive oil producer, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey to fill the gap.
