Arab Concerns Regarding the Situation in Syria
The situation in Syria remains a significant concern for Arab nations, as articulated by Egypt’s Foreign Minister. In a recent appearance on the Egyptian TV program “Ala Mas’uliyati” on Sada El Balad channel, the Foreign Minister emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive political process in Syria. He stated, “It’s crucial that this process excludes no one and reflects the diversity within Syrian society.”
The minister, Abd El-Atti, highlighted the importance of acknowledging the role of the Syrian national opposition that did not take up arms, which has been significant since 2011. He stressed that one of the key worries is ensuring Syria does not become a haven for terrorist elements, a point reiterated during the Riyadh meeting with the participation of the new Syrian administration.
Egypt’s Stance and Actions
Abd El-Atti clarified that Egypt’s foreign policy concerning Syria is guided by national interests.
He pointed out that Egypt translates its words into actions, making decisions based on
developments on the ground. He described Egypt’s approach as rational, noting, “Syria is a sister
nation, and what happens there directly affects us, especially considering over 1.5 million Syrians
live in Egypt.”
He further emphasized Egypt’s responsibility towards its Syrian brethren, stating that Egypt
supports Syrian sovereignty and interests while acknowledging that Syria has the autonomy to
accept or reject advice.
Future Hopes and Warnings
The Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed his hope for peace in Syria, recognizing it as a pivotal
state in the Arab world and the Middle East. He warned against the dangerous prospect of Syria’s
division, which could set a precedent for the fragmentation of other Arab states, something he
affirmed Egypt would not allow.
The dialogue around Syria is complex, involving political, humanitarian, and security
dimensions. Egypt’s position underscores a call for unity, diversity, and peace, advocating for a
Syrian-led political process that could lead to stability in the region.
