US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is giving a press conference after the G7 meeting in Tokyo, where members agreed on a unified response to the war in Gaza, including the call for “humanitarian pauses”.
But Blinken laid out the diplomatic requirements needed to begin a path towards “durable peace and security”.
“The United States believes key elements should include no forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, not now, not after the war. No use of Gaza as a platform for terrorism or other violent attacks.
“No re-occupation of Gaza after the conflict ends. No attempt to blockade or besiege Gaza. No reduction in the territory of Gaza. We must also ensure no terrorist threats can emanate from the West Bank,” Blinken told reporters.
He added post-war governance in Gaza has to have Palestinians’ voices and aspirations at its centre and see Gaza unified with the occupied West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.
