Brazil’s President Lula da Silva on Thursday visited the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, where he was welcomed by Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
Brazil’s President recalled that Brazil was the first Latin American country to receive observer status in the organization, and said he is proud of the historical and cultural ties that unite Brazil and the Arab world.
The Arab League’s “commitment to promoting stability and development makes this organization a voice to be listened to attentively on the great issues of our time,” he added.
“We want to revive and deepen our partnerships with the Global South, with whom we share so many visions, values, challenges and expectations.”
He said his visit to Egypt, as well as to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar last year, reflect Brazil’s desire for dialogue and collaboration.
“The potential in sectors such as trade, investment, environment, science and technology, culture and cooperation for development is immense,” Lula added.
“The strength of the relationship between Brazil and the league countries is also evident in our trade dynamism.
“The increase in trade, from $5.4 billion in 2003 to $30 billion in 2023, is a cause for contentment and optimism.”
Lula also talked about the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, saying: “At a time when the Palestinian people need support the most, rich countries are deciding to cut humanitarian aid to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
“This inhumanity and cowardice must end. Enough of collective punishment. My government will make a new contribution to UNRWA. We urge all countries to maintain and strengthen their contributions.
“The most urgent task is to establish a definitive ceasefire that allows for the delivery of sustainable and unimpeded humanitarian aid, and the immediate and unconditional release of hostages.
“Therefore, I come here to tell you of my persistence in continuing to fight for peace. Peace is the only possibility we have to build development and improve the lives of the people.”
According to a statement from the Arab League’s Secretariat, Aboul Gheit said he looks forward to Brazil’s continued support for the Palestinian cause in all international arenas. He also lauded ties between the Arab world and Brazil “on all levels.”
Lula also met with Kuwait’s permanent representative to the Arab League, Talal Al-Mutairi.
They discussed international and regional issues of common concern, Kuwait News Agency reported.
