The US does not believe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Monday.
“We believe Israel can and must do more to ensure the protection and wellbeing of innocent civilians. We do not believe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide,” Sullivan said.
Speaking to reporters, Sullivan said the US wanted to see Hamas defeated, but warned that Palestinian civilians caught in the middle were “in hell.” He also reiterated the Biden administration’s repeated opposition to a major Israeli military operation in Rafah.
Sullivan added that the US was concerned about an Israeli invasion, which did not take into account “what’s next.” He pointed to massive Israeli military operations in northern Gaza and then the return of Hamas militants.
