Iran renewed its condemnation of the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and on the territory of other countries in the region and called on the UN Security Council to take swift and decisive action to hold this rogue entity accountable.
“First, the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the continued aggression of Israeli regime against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and other countries in the region,” IRNA news agency quoted Iran’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, as saying in a UN Security Council session on Syria on Monday.
Iravani added that the illegal practices of Israeli regime, along with its recent aggression on Yemen, which deliberately targeted civilian and vital infrastructure, flagrantly violate international humanitarian law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter and are considered a serious threat to regional peace and security.
The Iranian delegate said that the US representative in the Council, as usual, hypocritically tried to deny her country’s responsibility for the current situation in Syria and the region in general and blame Iran, but the fact that they cannot deny is that the illegal presence of the US occupation forces in Syria violates its sovereignty, territorial integrity, international laws, the UN Charter, and Security Council resolutions, including Resolution No.2254 of 2015. It is also the main source of instability and insecurity and provides cover for terrorists there.
Iravani stressed that the inhumane coercive measures imposed by the US and its Western allies on Syria, their politicization of the refugee return file, and their obstruction of international support for the reconstruction of Syria have exacerbated the suffering of the Syrian people and hindered reconstruction efforts.
On behalf of Iran, Iravani called on the Western countries, which falsely claim to care for human rights and are imposing an economic blockade on Syria, to immediately lift these inhumane acts, stressing in this context the necessity of providing impartial and non-politicized humanitarian aid.
Iravani expressed Iran’s determination to continue supporting the Syrian people and government in their efforts to overcome the threats of terrorism and foreign occupation.
Iravani noted that the scourge of terrorism still poses a serious threat to Syria and the entire region and must be dealt with firmly, but with full respect for the national sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria, and that this should not be a pretext for violating these basic principles of international law.
