President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed on Tuesday with U.S. President Joe Biden regional developments and the tensions in the Middle East, reviewing the latest efforts by Egypt, the U.S., and Qatar to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and to de-escalate current regional tensions, the Egyptian Presidency and White House announced.
Both presidents affirmed their commitment to these efforts to de-escalate the situation and restore regional peace and security.
The call El-Sisi received from his U.S. counterpart also addressed current concerns about the expanding conflict in the region.
President El-Sisi highlighted Egypt’s view on the serious repercussions of the ongoing war in Gaza and its negative impact on regional stability, emphasizing that achieving a ceasefire in Gaza is essential for restoring calm and stability.
According to the White House, President Biden thanked President El-Sisi for his determined leadership in the facilitation of negotiations that have now reached a final stage.
The two presidents agreed to continue their intensive joint efforts to secure a ceasefire and to work towards implementing the two-state solution as the main guarantor of stability and security for all the region’s peoples.
The White House also announced that Biden held a similar telephone call with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani of Qatar.
Egypt, along with the US and Qatar, has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire in the 10-month-old Israeli war on Gaza, which has killed and injured 120,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, damaged most of the infrastructure, and displaced majority of the population.
In tandem, Egypt has been leading efforts to deliver aid to 2.4 million civilians in Gaza who are facing near-starvation conditions due to a deadly Israeli blockade on the strip.
Egypt has intensified communications with various parties in the region to defuse the current escalation the region in the aftermath of the recent Israeli assassination of senior Hezbollah military commander Fouad Shukur in south Beirut and the head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
