Donald Trump Jr. revealed details about a shooting near his father’s golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. He shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, that authorities found an AK-47 rifle hidden in bushes, and a suspect had been arrested.
Two sources confirmed that Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the upcoming U.S. presidential election, was unharmed after shots were fired. The gunfire came from outside the golf course, according to a Reuters report.
A law enforcement source stated that a person was arrested in connection with the shooting near Trump’s golf resort. Trump’s campaign earlier reassured the public that he was safe but did not provide further details.
The U.S. Secret Service confirmed it was investigating the incident, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT). The Washington Post reported that Trump was playing golf at the time, and the Secret Service quickly moved him to a secure room.
In response, the White House issued a statement saying that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the situation and were “relieved to hear he is okay” and would continue to receive updates.
This incident comes months after an assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania on July 13, where he sustained a minor ear injury. The assassination attempt was the first on a major U.S. presidential candidate in over four decades and led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle.
In that earlier attempt, one bystander was killed, and the Secret Service shot and killed the assailant, 20-year-old Thomas Cross.
