Microsoft and UAE-based G42 have unveiled two new artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives focused on the responsible use of AI technologies. These initiatives prioritize privacy, security, and protection of individual rights to prevent misuse.
Building on their strategic partnership announced earlier this year, the two companies will establish two new AI centers in Abu Dhabi. The first center is a joint venture between G42 and Microsoft, approved by the UAE’s Council for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology. This center will develop and implement best practices for AI, particularly in the Middle East and developing countries with less advanced digital infrastructure.
The second initiative involves opening Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab in Abu Dhabi. This lab will focus on using AI technologies for projects that address critical social issues such as climate change, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. It will collaborate with local and regional organizations to leverage AI for positive societal impact.
G42 and Microsoft will collaborate with the Abu Dhabi AI Center to bring together AI researchers, academics, and experts. This collaboration aims to foster knowledge sharing and ensure the responsible use of AI across various sectors in the Middle East and developing nations. Additionally, Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab in Abu Dhabi will work with non-profits to tackle economic and social challenges in the Middle East and Africa.
The partnership also extends to Microsoft’s AI Lab in Nairobi, which will develop AI models for underrepresented languages to help close the global linguistic gap. AI technologies will also be used to analyze agricultural and climate data, enhancing disaster preparedness and response.
Strengthening Abu Dhabi’s AI Hub
These initiatives will reinforce Abu Dhabi’s role as a global AI innovation hub, driving advancements while ensuring responsible AI policies. Microsoft and G42 have committed to implementing AI safety standards, overseen by the U.S. and UAE governments, to ensure compliance with laws and cybersecurity measures.
Enhancing U.S.-UAE Relations
Microsoft President Brad Smith noted that these initiatives will expand the reach and impact of responsible AI, improving U.S.-UAE relations. G42 CEO Peng Xiao emphasized the importance of responsible AI in solving global challenges and positioning Abu Dhabi as a leader in AI, with a focus on safety, trust, and cooperation.
G42 adheres to U.S. regulations by not engaging with redlisted entities, ensuring secure AI development. The joint compliance committee meets quarterly, and weekly operational reviews ensure adherence to security standards. G42’s compliance program follows best practices for security and legal requirements.
This partnership exemplifies the transfer of cutting-edge technology from developed to developing regions, aiming to narrow the digital divide and address key social issues. As part of this broader effort, Microsoft and G42 have invested $1 billion in Kenya to use geothermal energy for digital data projects.
Since November 2023, G42 has been migrating its public cloud infrastructure to Microsoft Azure, enhancing operational security and efficiency across its services. This transition marks a significant step in their collaborative efforts and innovation in AI.
