Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty and Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib discussed recent developments in the Middle East, focusing on the Israeli airstrikes targeting southern Lebanon on Monday morning.
During their meeting on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, both ministers condemned the attacks on Lebanese territory and called for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Minister Abdel Aty emphasized that any threat to Lebanon’s security is a threat to the entire region. The two ministers agreed on the necessity of halting the ongoing Israeli aggression and urged influential nations to play their part in preventing further escalation, which could lead to a wider regional conflict.
The joint statement stressed the importance of international and UN action to enforce General Assembly and Security Council resolutions. They also called for a binding Security Council resolution to compel Israel to immediately cease its attacks on Palestinian and Lebanese territories.
Both ministers underscored the need for Israel to comply with its obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, ensuring civilian protection from the consequences of ongoing aggression.
The ministers concluded by emphasizing that the only way to resolve the current Middle Eastern crisis is through a comprehensive ceasefire and an end to the aggression against Gaza and Lebanon.
