France, Italy, and Spain jointly condemned Israel’s attack on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Friday. The three countries issued a statement calling such attacks “unjustified and must end immediately.”
Western Nations Condemn Israel’s Actions
The joint statement expressed outrage after several UNIFIL peacekeepers were injured in Naqoura. “These attacks represent a serious violation of Israel’s obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and international humanitarian law,” the statement added. It emphasized that all peacekeeping forces must be protected, praising the ongoing commitment of UNIFIL members under such difficult circumstances.
Call for Ceasefire and Global Reactions
The statement also called for an immediate ceasefire. U.S. President Joe Biden urged Israel to stop firing on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, affirming, “Absolutely, without a doubt,” when asked by reporters if he wanted Israel to cease these attacks.
The British government expressed shock over the reports, with a spokesperson saying, “It is essential to protect peacekeepers and civilians,” and called for an immediate ceasefire, urging compliance with international law.
Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris also voiced “deep concern,” while Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin described the incidents as “an extraordinary and deeply shocking development.”
Israel’s Response
In a statement released on Friday, the Israeli army said two UNIFIL personnel were injured during its response to a “threat from southern Lebanon.” The military announced that it is conducting a thorough review to determine the details of the attacks on the peacekeepers.
UNIFIL also released a statement calling this a “serious development,” stressing the importance of ensuring the safety of all UN personnel and their equipment.
