Continuous drone launches from Iraq toward Israel have raised the possibility of a direct Israeli response, according to Associated Press sources. U.S. officials indicate that Iran-backed militias are carrying out frequent drone operations, prompting the United States and its allies to intercept these unmanned aircraft en route to Israel.
A regional security official revealed that there has been an average of five daily drone attacks originating from Iraq, with militant groups aligned with Iran increasing their drone activity to as many as eight launches within a single day last week.
Rising Tensions and Iran’s Reaction
On Thursday, Iran promised a “harsh response” to Israel’s recent strikes on its military facilities, as reported by Tasnim News Agency. Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, an aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, called the Israeli attacks “a desperate act” and warned that Iran’s retaliation would be severe.
U.S. Military Reinforcements in the Region
The Pentagon announced on Friday that U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has approved sending additional military reinforcements to the Middle East, including bombers, fighter jets, and naval vessels. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships are also preparing for deployment.
Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder clarified that several B-52 bombers, fighter squadrons, refueling planes, and destroyers would be stationed in the Middle East over the coming months.
“If Iran or its allies use this opportunity to target U.S. citizens or interests in the region, the U.S. will take all necessary steps to defend our people,” Ryder stated, underscoring America’s readiness to respond to any further escalations.
With tensions escalating, the international community watches closely for potential responses from Israel as the frequency and intensity of regional conflicts increase.
