Sudanese army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has implemented a cabinet reshuffle, replacing Foreign Minister Hussein Awad with Ambassador Yusuf Ali, formerly the ministry’s undersecretary. Additionally, Khalid Al-Esaeir has been appointed as Minister of Information, succeeding Graham Abdel Qader.
According to a press release from Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, al-Burhan approved decisions made by the transitional cabinet, including the reassignment of Foreign Minister Awad and the new appointment of Ambassador Ali Yusuf Ahmed Sharif. Ali Yusuf, the new foreign minister, held multiple roles in Sudan’s foreign ministry prior to his retirement. He also led the Sudan-China Friendship Associations and worked within the Elders Committee, which was formed to address the crisis following the October 25, 2021, coup.
In April, al-Burhan had appointed Ambassador Awad as Foreign Minister, succeeding Ali al-Sadiq. Al-Sadiq had been part of a 15-member cabinet appointed after the dissolution of the transitional Sovereignty and Cabinet Councils and the declaration of a state of emergency in October 2021.
The reshuffle also includes the replacement of Graham Abdel Qader with Khalid Al-Esaeir as Minister of Culture and Information.
