Second Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit Decides to Enhance the Palestinian Cause on the International Stage
Participants at the Second Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh on Monday decided to establish a joint coordination mechanism among the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union to enhance the Palestinian cause on the international stage.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, stated in a press conference
following the summit: “For the first time in history, an agreement will be signed to create a joint
mechanism between these three organizations concerning coordination among them to support
the Palestinian cause, support the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, and implement
decisions regarding the Palestinian issue.”
According to Aboul Gheit, the modalities of interaction for this tripartite mechanism and its
operational principles will be discussed in a high-level meeting of representatives from the three
organizations.
The draft final statement of the summit, as broadcast by Saudi television, mentioned that “the
participants call upon the UN Security Council to adopt a decisive and binding resolution
demanding a halt to Israeli aggression, considering failure to do so as complicity in allowing
Israel to continue its offensive which kills innocents including children, the elderly, and women,
reduces the population, and turns the Gaza Strip into rubble.”
Aboul Gheit also confirmed that the participants at the second exceptional Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh agreed on taking measures to freeze Israel’s membership in the United Nations.
Saudi Arabia hosted on Monday the Second Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit concerning the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, attended by leaders and representatives from 50 countries.
